Darwin Birding

I have a full-on 2 weeks of birding about to commence but decided after my last Top End trip that I would allow a few days for relaxing this time around. Yes, shock, gasp, I can hear you all from here.

So, for day one I decided not to hire a car as I was not planning on chasing any lifers today. Instead I thought I’d catch up with my mate Mike who runs a birding tour called Experience the Wild. He had guests booked  but there was still one seat available so I joined them for the day. My aim was to improve a few photos, get my bearings around Darwin again and generally try and relax so I can enjoy my birding time in the Top End. All of these aims were achieved, with a great time being had, friendly company and excellent birding locations. Thanks Mike!

One of the highlights of the day for me was a pair of Beach Stone-curlews. I enjoyed photographing these with Bernie, a keen birder from Melbourne who was fun to go birding with - thanks Bernie, I enjoyed your enthusiasm!

Another photography target was the Lemon-bellied Flycatcher. Yeah yeah ok, so they are very common but for some reason I did not have a decent photo of one so while everyone else was looking for the elusive birds, there I was running around looking for a common one!! Happily they are everywhere so I did get a few snaps!

In the arvo we headed to Knuckey Lagoons which I love. A great birding location very close to Darwin. I always check for King Quail here but sadly no luck. But stunning with a great selection of water birds and a few waders.

Then it was off to Fogg Dam. Another must do for any serious birder. Pied Heron, Magpie Goose, Comb-crested Jacana, Green Pigmy-goose, Glossy Ibis and Brolga were all observed along with bush birds including Grey (Brown) Whistler, Mistletoebird, Broad-billed Flycatcher. Highlight for me here were the Pratincoles.

Mallee birds - Brookfield Conservation Park

What can be better than a morning with a friend birding in the Mallee?

This morning Chris and I spent a few hours exploring Brookfield Conservation Park. It is looking green and lush after all the rain.

Here are a few photos from the day.

Northern Shoveler twitch in Victoria

A social weekend was in store when I decided to twitch the Northern Shoveler at Werribee. I flew to Melbourne on Friday night and my friend Vik collected me from the airport. He  was generous enough to also offer to collect my friend Frank at 4.45am on Saturday morning!

Bleary eyed we had breakfast at Werribee while waiting for sunrise so we could find the Shoveler.

During the day we met up with some of my other friends, Jen, Ruth and Paul and we all enjoyed great views of this stunning bird before enjoying a day of general birding around this fantastic site.

Sunday we spent exploring  areas around Mt Alexander, birding and drinking coffee!

Here are a few photos taken during the weekend.

A birding Hobby

Driving around over the long weekend always pays to take your camera!

A pair of Australian Hobby frequent a tree near my friends house. Today they were hanging around so I snapped off a few photos...

Forest Wagtail in Alice Springs, NT

Forest Wagtail

A last minute decison to spend the weekend in Alice and chase the Forest Wagtail turned out to be a very good decision indeed.

The owners of the property that the Wagtail is currently calling home were exceptionally friendly and helpful, as was my mate Chris who popped in for a visit. Sincere thank you to Anne, Will and Chris for your generosity and thoughtfulness!!

I managed to catch up with other birding mates who had flown in from Victoria, Perth and Darwin and it became quite a social event.

The bird performed well on 3 occasions over the day, clearly enjoying Anne's remarkably beautiful garden.

Frank, Chris and I then decided to chase Slaty-backed Thornbills  so had a fun few hours around Simpson's Gap and locating a couple.

Frank and I then spent the rest of the daybirding at the Desert Park which has fantastic habitat and is well worth a day visit.

We had breakfast and some quality time at the Olive Pink Botanical Gardens and had a great time with a Western Bowerbird.
